Hi! My name is Ian Niven and these pages are about my experiences learning to skydive.

My tandem skydive

I was doing a round the world trip and had only planned to be in New Zealand for four weeks. At the beginning of April 2004 I was in Queenstown and decided to do a tandem skydive. I thought it would be a one-off experience. It was the scariest thing I have ever done in my life but it was the biggest rush I've ever experienced. I couldn't stop thinking about it and looking at the photos.

A couple of weeks later I was in Rotorua signed up for a skydiving course! It was the most amazing thing (and the hardest) that I've ever done. I set-up this site so that my friends could see photos of that tandem skydive. Since completing the course and subsequently becoming a licensed skydiver I've been adding pictures of the rest of my skydiving experiences.

07.06.2007 The reason there hasn't been any skydiving for a while - our Civil Union! Saturday 2nd June at Glamz in Hamilton, New Zealand. A day I'll never forget. Some photos here, thanks Marcel, Tania and Amanda for taking some awesome shots - there's plenty more to come, this is just a quick selection to give everyone an idea.
26.03.2007 I finally got a PC and broadband set-up at home! I'm plouging through my inbox as I get the chance and I'll be replying to everyone soon. I also hope to put up some more photos that I've had since last year.
04.03.2007 Big News! Not skydiving related but it will have an effect on how much jumping I get done in the next three months: My partner, Jason, and I are getting a Civil Union! We've set the date for 2nd June 2007 (only three months away). The ceremony will take place in Hamilton, New Zealand, which is where I live and work. I'm really excited about it but it does mean that we have to save money like mad for the next three months so I'm probably not going to be able to afford as much skydiving as I was hoping for. Still, this is the sort of thing I'm only planning on doing once, so it's worth it. Jason doesn't jump and I'm not pushing him to do one but who knows? I still don't have access to my email so appologies again to anyone who has sent me an email and not got a reply. I'm hoping I'll be getting the computer and an internet connection sorted out at home in the next couple of weeks, if I can afford it... Cheers, Ian.
19.02.2007 Jumped at Rotorua on Saturday - first time back there for over three months. Money still tight so no prospect of huge amount of jumping in the next coulpe of months or so.
25.01.2007 No jumps since New Year's day - money is a bit tight this month. I'm hoping that come February I'll have things a bit more sorted and can get into some serious weekend jumping at Matamata.
04.01.2007 Happy New Year! Sorry for the lack of updates - I don't have a PC at home at the moment. I also haven't had access to my email for a while so sorry if you've mailed me and I haven't replied. I hope to get things back to normal in the next couple of months. Jumped at Skydive Waikato at Matamata on New Year's day. Really friendly people who made me feel very welcome - thanks guys! I'm looking forward to doing a lot of jumping there.
04.07.2006 Swooped my first tandem on Sunday! Bit scary (I've spent two years being told "Stay well away from tandems - if you see one, get away from it!") but it was great fun. It was awesome to climb-out and see the passenger's face right in front of me rather than just seeing them on a video. Really hope I'm going to get some time soon to write a news item and put up some of the pictures from the last few months. Thanks to everyone who's been staying in touch - it's great to hear from you.
18.06.2006 Done my 200th jump! Also started jumping with a video camera. Lots of stuff going on but no time at the moment to write about it!
14.05.2006 Got my NZ work permit and work visa and I'm now working in Hamilton and living in Cambridge, spending my weekends down in Rotorua.
27.04.2006 Sorry for the lack of news - things have been hectic. I jumped in Cromwell (near Queenstown) and got to do a fun jump with my Tandem Master from two years ago, CJ. It was awesome to meet up with him and to jump together again - not attached this time! Got some great photos and video and thanks to everyone at Big Daddy Skydiving Adventures for a brilliant day (four jumps) and for making me feel so welcome. I can also finally let everyone know that I've been offered a computer job in New Zealand, in Hamilton, and I'm getting all the immigration stuff sorted out now! There's other great stuff going on as well but it'll have to wait until I have plenty of time to do a proper news item about it.
13.04.2006 In Queenstown for Easter and I'm hoping to do some jumps while I'm down here. Back in Rotorua next Wednesday, 19th April. The weather here is quite fantastic and I'm hoping it stays so for a few days.
06.04.2006 Did a Hop & Pop from 2,500ft today - great fun. Things are moving and I'm not in Auckland anymore. I'm back in Rotorua for the time being and I should know what my long-term plans are by the start of next week. It's all getting very exciting but a bit scary as well!
15.03.2006 I've moved to Auckland now and probably won't be jumping for a while as I have other things to get serious about here. I had a great time in Rotorua and I'm sure it won't be too long before I'm back down there again for the odd weekend.
10.03.2006 Did my 160th jump today!
05.03.2006 Got my fifth nominated landing within 5m of the target today! Just need the four-ways and the jump numbers now to get my C License!
02.03.2006 I've started working towards my C license. I need to do five nominated descents where I land within 5m of the target - I've got four so far so just one more to go! I also need to do six more four-way formation jumps (I need to have done fifty formation jumps of which ten have involved four or more people) and then get my total jumps up to 200. I won't get it all done before I leave Rotorua but I should get it sorted over the next few months.
27.02.2006 I'm having an amazing time. My leaving party in Truro at the Crab & Ale was awesome - thank you to everyone who came and to Brenda and Gary for letting me have the evening as a private party. It's great to be back in New Zealand and to be with all my friends here in Rotorua. I'm here for a couple of weeks and then I'm heading up to Auckland for at least two months. I'm jumping again and I've just done my 150th jump! Drinks tonight at the Echo Bar! I'll put up all the details here soon.
10.02.2006 I've had to disable the guestbook as it was being repeatedly hit by spam. It's a shame. Thanks to everyone who has left messages over the last year or so. If anyone would like to send me a message or a comment about my site then please email me (ian_truro@yahoo.com).
28.01.2006 Ticketes booked - I'm going back to New Zealand! I leave the UK on 21st February. I'm planning on being there for two months but I'm hoping that it's going to be a lot, lot longer than that. Major leaving party at The Crab & Ale House, Truro, Cornwall, UK from 7pm on Friday 17th February.
24.01.2006 Two more new sets of photos Arch! and Flying Squirrel Enjoy!
23.01.2006 Finally got some new photos on the site! Adrenaline Soaked Heroes of the Sky. I've got some more to put up as well but I don't know when I'll have time - things are a bit hectic at the moment for reasons I won't go into now but which I hope to be able to explain very shortly...
